Where is the battery in a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
For most vehicles, jump-starting dead battery is simply a matter of popping the hood and connecting some jumper cables. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is not most vehicles. To pay homage to the history of the brand, the Grand Cherokee is not where one would expect. So, where is the battery in a Jeep Grand Cherokee? Jeep designers and engineers have placed the battery under the passenger seat, much like it was when the original Jeep was introduced during World War II. This has some special implications for owners in the event a battery is fully discharged. Let’s take a closer look.

How do I jump-start a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
While the battery for the Grand Cherokee is located under the passenger seat, the basic steps to jump-starting a dead Jeep battery begin the same way. There are remote battery terminals located under the hood.
NOTE: Shift the vehicle into park, turn the key off and engage the parking brake before starting the jump-starting the battery.
Connecting the battery cables
Place the positive end of the jumper cable on the positive terminal and the negative end on the negative terminal. Make sure this is done on both the disabled vehicle and the one being used for the supplemental power.
Once the cables are connected to both vehicles, turn on the source vehicle first – then the try starting the disabled vehicle. When the disabled vehicle turns over, make sure to leave it running for a while. We have included some videos that could be helpful along the way.

Very informative video on how to replace the car battery that is located under the passenger seat of a Jeep Grand Cherokee. My question is how do you move the electrically powered passenger seat forward to access the battery compartment if the battery is dead?
How do l move the passenger seat ahead if the battery is dead
My mechanic painted the posts for the battery cables to attach to the battery. Who’s is positive & which is negative for a 97 Grand Jeep Cherokee?
Good video, however – how do you move the passenger seat if the battery is dead.
Thanks!
Who at Jeep Corporation thought this was a brilliant idea? I don’t see any replies about how would you move the seat up if the battery is dead. Just another poor engineering design from Jeep.
Well my best guess to the battery issue if it’s dead I guess you would have to give it a jump start to still be able to move it forward to access the battery panel it is a poor design it would have been better I trunk by spare tire in my opinion
Hi – although the battery is under the passenger seat, there are remote pod and neg terminals under the hood for charging
