What does the Nissan Rear Door Alert system do?

Forgetting something in the back seat of your vehicle is certainly annoying and inconvenient, but it can also be very dangerous if a child is riding with you. Parents are under a lot of stress and making being occasionally absent-minded isn’t terribly uncommon. Leaving a child in the vehicle is incredibly dangerous, even on relatively cool days. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that temperatures inside of a vehicle can reach as high as 110 degrees Fahrenheit when the outside temps are only in the mid-60s. Nissan is adding a system to all vehicles with four or more doors to solve this problem. So, what does the Nissan Rear Door Alert system do? Let’s take a look.

How does it work?

Unlike many of the other technology additions to new Nissan vehicles, the automaker’s Rear Door Alert system is actually pretty easy to understand and even easier to use. A simple series of sensors monitors the sequence of doors being opened and close in comparison to the vehicle being in motion.

If the Nissan Rear Door Alert sensors that one of the rear doors or rear hatch, is opened and not accessed again after a drive, a notification will display on a screen in the center gauge cluster. After that, the vehicle’s horn will make a series of distinct chirps to remind drivers to check the back seat of the vehicle*.

“I’m proud to see Nissan lead the way by making Rear Door Alert standard on more models,” Marlene Mendoza, a mechanical engineer who helped create the technology, said in a press release. “What started as a chat with my colleague, Elsa Foley, is now innovative technology being adopted in more Nissan models. It is a testament to Nissan’s culture.”

Which vehicles offer the Nissan Rear Door Alert?

As of right now, the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder comes with the Rear Door Alert system as standard equipment. Additionally, the 2019 models of the Nissan Rogue and Altima will also have the rear seat reminder on all trims when they’re available at Billion Auto Group showrooms. The manufacturer will be adding the system to all trucks, sedans and SUV models with four or more doors by the 2022 model year.
